LUMIX Tether: setup, compatibility and troubleshooting

LUMIX Tether is Panasonic's free desktop application for controlling a LUMIX camera from a computer. This site is an independent reference written for people who are trying to get it working — not a manufacturer support portal. Panasonic publishes the software; we document the setup steps, the model-by-model differences and the failures that send people searching in the first place.

What LUMIX Tether actually does

Once the camera is connected, the application takes over the parts of the shoot that are awkward to do at the body. Four things matter in practice:

  • Remote control. Aperture, shutter, ISO, white balance and Photo Style are set from the computer, so nobody has to touch a camera that is already framed and levelled.
  • Live view on a real monitor. Focus and framing checks on a laptop screen instead of a 3-inch rear display, with grids and overlays.
  • Direct saving. Files land on the computer as they are captured, which doubles as a running backup during a paid shoot.
  • Multiple bodies. Recent versions handle several connected cameras at once and can show them side by side.

Who it is for

Studio and product photographers who need a client-visible preview and files on disk immediately; e-commerce teams shooting hundreds of items against a fixed setup; wildlife and macro shooters working from a rail or remote position; and small production crews running box cameras where the body is rigged out of reach. If you only want a webcam feed for a video call, tethering is usually the harder route — see the streaming guide for what the software does and does not replace.

Supported camera families

Support is per body and per application version — a new camera only works once a release adds it. The compatibility table lists the minimum version for each model.

The basic setup flow

  1. Install the current release from Panasonic, as an administrator, with other software closed.
  2. Update the camera body firmware first — mismatched pairs are a common cause of failures.
  3. Connect with a data-rated USB-C cable, or wired LAN on the bodies that support it.
  4. Set the camera's USB mode to PC(Tether). This is the single most-missed step.
  5. Launch the application; the camera should appear within a few seconds.
  6. Set the save location before the first frame, so nothing lands in a temporary folder.

Where to get the software

Download it from Panasonic. We deliberately do not host a copy: an installer mirrored by a third party cannot be verified as authentic, and camera software is a common target for repackaging.

The usual causes are a charge-only USB cable, the camera's USB mode left on PC(Storage) instead of PC(Tether), or an application version older than the one that added support for that body.
