LUMIX Tether setup guide

A tethered LUMIX session has six moving parts: the application, the body firmware, the cable, the camera's USB mode, the computer's power settings and the save location. Get those right and the rest is straightforward. This page covers them in the order they actually cause trouble.

Download the current build from Panasonic (see our download information page), log in as an administrator and close other software. On Windows the installer places a desktop entry; on macOS it installs into Applications and will ask for permission the first time it talks to a camera.

Panasonic ships application updates specifically to match new body firmware. If the two are out of step, the symptom is rarely a clean error — it is a camera that connects and then behaves oddly, or a body that is on the supported list but never appears. Update the body, then the application.

USB-C

The default for almost every body. Use a cable that is explicitly rated for USB 3.x data transfer. A cable that came with a phone charger will power the camera and never enumerate it. Plug into the computer directly rather than through a hub or a monitor's downstream port; unpowered hubs are a recurring cause of mid-session dropouts.

Wired LAN

The BGH1 and BS1H have Ethernet built in. The GH5II, S5IIX, GH7, S1RII, S1II and S1IIE can use a USB-LAN adapter. Wired LAN is the right choice for long runs, rigged cameras and multi-body setups, and it avoids the macOS limitation on multiple simultaneous USB connections.

Wi-Fi

Available on the box cameras. Usable, but Panasonic itself recommends USB or wired LAN for remote control, and dropped links on busy venue networks are exactly why.

This is the step most people miss. On recent S and GH bodies the path is roughly Setup → IN/OUT → USB → USB Mode and the value you want is PC(Tether), not PC(Storage) and not USB-SSD. Menu wording varies slightly by body; the exact path per model is on each camera guide.

Start the application with the camera already on and connected. It should list the body within a few seconds and show live view. If nothing appears, work through the detection checklist rather than reinstalling — reinstalling almost never fixes it.

Direct saving writes captures to the computer as they happen. Point it at the job folder before you start, decide whether the card keeps a parallel copy, and check free space. Recovering files from a default temporary folder halfway through a client shoot is avoidable work.
