LUMIX Tether troubleshooting hub

Almost every LUMIX Tether failure falls into one of five buckets: the cable, the camera's USB mode, a version mismatch, the computer's power management, or an operating system permission. Start with the symptom that matches yours.

Likely causes

• USB power management suspending the port during idle moments.
• An unpowered hub, a monitor's downstream port, or a long passive cable running near the spec limit.
• The camera going to sleep because its own power-save timer is short.
• On Wi-Fi, ordinary channel congestion — this is why wired is recommended.

What to check, in order

1. Move the cable to a port directly on the computer.
2. Disable USB selective suspend (Windows) or prevent sleep while plugged in (Mac).
3. Set the camera's sleep and auto-power-off timers to off while tethered.
4. Swap the cable for a shorter, data-rated one and see if the pattern changes.
5. If the body supports it, move to wired LAN — dropouts almost always stop.

Likely causes

• The link negotiated USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.x, so there is not enough bandwidth for a smooth preview.
• Live view quality is set higher than the connection can carry.
• The lens cap is on, the body is in a mode with no preview, or an external recorder has taken the output.
• A graphics driver problem on the computer, which shows as a black panel rather than a stalled image.

Diagnostic steps

1. Check the negotiated USB speed on the computer. Anything reporting 480 Mbps means the cable or port dropped you to USB 2.0.
2. Lower the live view image quality setting and see if the image returns.
3. Disconnect any HDMI recorder and retry.
4. Restart the application with the camera already connected, rather than hot-plugging.

The application does not expose every camera function, and some controls are disabled by the body's current state rather than by a fault. Check, in order: the drive mode (a bracketing or high-resolution sequence in progress locks the release), whether the body is in video mode, whether the card door is open or the card is full, and whether a manual-focus-only lens is fitted when you are trying to drive autofocus.

Panasonic releases application updates alongside body firmware. Two rules cover most of this: a camera released after your installed version will never appear, and a body updated to firmware newer than your application can behave inconsistently. Check the minimum version for your model in the compatibility table, then update both.
