LUMIX S5II tethering with LUMIX Tether

What is specific to the LUMIX S5II (DC-S5M2): the port, the menu path, the minimum application version, and the faults that turn up on this body rather than in general.

Connecting the LUMIX S5II

  1. Install LUMIX Tether 2.4 or later from Panasonic, and update the body's firmware first.
  2. Power the camera from mains through a DC coupler for any session longer than a few minutes.
  3. Set Setup → IN/OUT → USB → USB-SSD/Mode → PC(Tether).
  4. Connect a data-rated USB cable directly to the computer, then launch the application.
  5. Select the body in the camera list and confirm live view appears before you start shooting.

The general procedure, including save locations and folder structure, is on the setup page.

What this body does well tethered

  • Phase-detect autofocus stays active in tethered live view, so remote focus checks behave like they do on the body.
  • Direct saving writes RAW+JPEG to the computer while still recording to the card, which is useful as a live backup on paid shoots.
  • Exposure, white balance and Photo Style changes made in the app apply immediately on the body.

Limitations to plan around

  • No native Ethernet port. Wired LAN tethering is not available on the S5II the way it is on the S5IIX.
  • High Resolution mode images shown in the review window are resized for display; the saved file is untouched.
  • The Grain Effect of a Photo Style is not rendered in live view.

Problems specific to the LUMIX S5II

The camera charges but LUMIX Tether never lists it.

The USB mode is almost always still on PC(Storage) or the cable is charge-only. Set USB mode to PC(Tether) and use a cable that is explicitly rated for USB 3.x data.

Live view is smooth but shutter release is greyed out.

The body is in video record mode or the card door is open. Switch the drive mode away from video and close the door.

The connection drops after a few minutes on a laptop.

USB selective suspend (Windows) or a low-power USB hub. Plug directly into the machine and disable USB power saving for the port.
