LUMIX Tether does not detect the camera

The symptom: the application opens, the camera is powered on and connected, and the camera list stays empty. Work through these in order — they are sequenced by how often each one turns out to be the cause, not by how technical they are.

This is the single most common cause. A USB-C cable that came with a power bank or phone charger carries power and nothing useful for tethering. The camera will show a charging indicator and never enumerate as a device.

• Use a cable explicitly rated for USB 3.x data transfer.
• Test the same cable with an external SSD. If the drive mounts and transfers fast, the cable is fine.
• Check the negotiated speed on the computer. 480 Mbps means you are on a USB 2.0 path.

Second most common, and invisible unless you go looking. The body defaults to a storage mode, in which the computer sees a card reader instead of a controllable camera. The path is roughly Setup → IN/OUT → USB → USB Mode; select PC(Tether). On bodies with an external-SSD feature, make sure that mode is off — it claims the same port. Each camera was added in a specific release. A GH7 will never appear in a version that predates GH7 support, no matter how the cable is wired. Look up the minimum version in the compatibility table, then install the current release from Panasonic.

Panasonic pairs application updates with body firmware. Update the camera, then the application, then reconnect. Do not update firmware over a connection you already suspect.

• Plug directly into the computer, not a hub, dock or monitor port.
• Try a different physical port — on many laptops only some ports are full-speed.
• Remove USB extension cables. Extensions are outside the guaranteed configuration.

Windows

• Open Device Manager with the camera connected. If nothing appears or disappears when you unplug, the problem is below the application — cable, port or mode.
• A device shown with a warning icon points at a driver state; remove the device and reconnect to force re-enumeration.
• Disable USB selective suspend for the port.

macOS

• Approve any permission prompt the first time the app runs; a dismissed prompt looks exactly like a detection failure.
• Check System Information → USB. If the camera is not listed there, the application cannot see it either.
• Do not expect several USB-connected bodies to work at once on recent macOS releases.

Connect the same camera and cable to a different computer. If it is invisible there too, the issue is the body, the port on the body or the cable — not the software install. A USB-C port that has taken a knock is a real and under-diagnosed cause.

If the camera is supported, on current firmware, in PC(Tether) mode, on a known-good data cable and in a direct port on two machines, the next stop is Panasonic support with that list in hand — it rules out everything a forum reply would ask you first.
